Junior Learn to Sail programme
The 2025/2026 Spring & Summer Calendar will be published here
There are no plans for scheduled sailing over Winter in 2025
Programme outline
We run a Spring/Summer Junior LTS program staffed by volunteers which starts in October each year running through until April.
We use select Sunday mornings at Oneroa bay to coach young sailors in their own Optimist class boats.
There are a number of entry level boats available to purchase - please enquire.
Briefing time is 0930 and we are usually off the water at midday.
Our volunteer run Junior Learn to Sail program follows the Yachting New Zealand Level one guidelines and requires sailors to have their own Optimist dinghy - there are several economical examples currently available with families on the island.
By all means call down to the beach if your son or daughter is interested, see what's involved & we can usually get you out for a 'have a go sail'.
As well as the standard Oneroa Learn To Sail days we also have the occasional event at the Causeway in Putiki Bay (including an annual Treasure Hunt), have the option to sail out of Surfdale if the weather is preferable and do a Nani Island race at the end of the season
We do not offer a learn to sail programme for adults. Clubs in Auckland that do include the Royal Akarana, Royal NZ Yacht Squadron and Buckland Beach Yacht Club.
The current progression plan is through Starling and then Laser classes – double handed possibilities that are encouraged include RS Fevas, 420s and 29ers.
