4 race days were held prior to Level 4 arriving
Race 4 report:
A sunny day promised some ideal winter sailing with the forecast 10 knot South westerly building to over 15 knots as it bent into Surfdale. Our 3 Lasers had some very close starts and first beats, with Dylan squeezing ahead on the reaches to claim all the cordite for the day. Robin & Simon had their time in the sun and worked hard in the lumpy chop to give a solid chase. Leo and Aedan were the sole Sunburst and had some great surfs downwind for Aedans first time out. Just the one J14 this week and 79 experienced an unplanned trailer fail on route to the beach still making it thanks to Phil’s assistance with a real trailer. The powered up J14 behaved diferently particularly on the start line and wasn’t able to hold station as well as the Lasers. Having laid that weak excuse down, 79 managed to get into the Lasers occassionally and stay up-right for the 4 races. Thanks Dave & Phil for running the safety boat.
Race 2 report:
A fun day had by all for race day two with Dave setting us a slalom style course. Conditions were very light however we were able to get three races completed albiet shorter than usual. We had Lasers, J14’s and a Sunburst resulting in two different line honours winners and three different handicap winners. Race day 3 is 1st August at surfdale beach - midday briefing. Thanks to Dave, Kent, Lucas, Phil & Bernard for crewing the safety boats.
Most of our summer sailing is held at Oneroa beach where the launching gradient is ideal and the breeze usually kind. In summer we share the bay with anchored cruising boats and occasionally move to Surfdale or Blackpool beaches on the rare occasion conditions at Oneroa are unfavourable.
In Winter we are known to sail Lasers from Shelly Beach with the 'Mid-Winter Slalom' race day a popular social occasion to bring us away from home chores.
Currently we are active in the following classes;
Optimist - Starling - Laser 4.7 - Laser Standard - J14 Jollyboat - Cadet - 420 High School Team Racing
Sept 2017 - there are a number of Starlings arriving on island for sailors close to 50kg as next step from Opti
